The GMC Prep girls basketball team took care of business Tuesday night to advance to the Region 7-A semifinals.

The Lady Dogs left Mount de Sales behind in the first quarter on their way to a 48-27 win at Stratford Academy, the site of girls first round play. Head coach Shawn Dennis’ girls will now turn their attention to fellow semifinalist Wilkinson County as the two are set to square off at 7 p.m. Friday with a spot on the region championship on the line. The remainder of the Region 7-A basketball championships, both boys and girls brackets, will be played inside the Hancock Central gymnasium in nearby Sparta.

The GMC girls carried an 18-2 advantage heading into the second quarter versus Mount de Sales Tuesday and then were up 27-8 at the break. A big third-quarter performance only widened the lead and further secured the Lady Dogs’ third consecutive trip at least into the region semifinals. They lost there two years ago, but advanced to the title game last year before falling to Stratford.

Juniors DeAisha and Deandria Stephens led the way for GMC Prep in the quarterfinal round, finishing with 17 and 13 points respectively, a combined total that was enough on its own to overcome the opponent.

Other teams that advanced Tuesday were Wilkinson County (53-43 over Hancock Central), defending region champ Stratford (57-34 over Aquinas) and Lake Oconee Academy (63-50 over FPD) meaning that all higher seeds advanced through the first round. The GMC Prep Lady Dogs (18-4 overall, 13-1 region) will not have an easy road into the finals when they face the Lady Warriors of Wilkinson County, a team that was 14-12 overall through the regular season and 8-2 in region play. Wilco’s only two region losses came against top-seeded Stratford. GMC Prep and Wilco are scheduled to tip off at 7 p.m. in Sparta Friday while the other semifinal between Stratford and Lake Oconee Academy is set for earlier that day at 4 p.m. Winners will meet in the Region 7-A championship Saturday at 7 p.m. while the losers will square off in a 4 p.m. consolation game.
