The Baldwin Braves were very well-represented on this season’s All-Region 4-4A football team.
A total of 19 BHS players received some sort of honor as voted on by the region’s coaches.
Leading the way for Baldwin was DB/WR Javon Bullard who was named the Region Player of the Year for his work in all three phases of the game. A recent University of Georgia football signee, Bullard was second on his team with 74 total tackles this year with seven of them going for a loss. He also helped out the Braves on offense with 13 receptions for 283 yards and four touchdowns while playing wide receiver.
Joining Bullard in earning POY honors was senior outside linebacker Antonio Reaves who was named the 4-4A Defensive Player of the Year after totaling 86 tackles in the Braves’ seven games this year. Reaves had 20 tackles for loss, eight sacks and an interception to his name as well while helping Baldwin football finish with a 5-2 record.
Baldwin had six players named to the All-Region first offensive and defensive teams. Sophomore wideout Shatavious Hogan put together his second consecutive strong season at the varsity level with 378 yards on 23 catches. Both those figures led the Braves as did his six touchdown receptions. Joining him on the first team offense was sophomore lineman Jermon Simmons who graded out at 85 percent this season. Lineman grades are based on the percentage of times a lineman does his job on each play, and 85 is a very strong number in that category. Junior defensive end Omarion Knight, junior linebacker Gavin Davis, junior defensive back Kirtavious Hightower and junior defensive back Dexter Ricks Jr. were all named to the first team defense, giving the Braves a very strong core looking ahead to next season. Knight had 15 tackles for loss in ’20 while Davis had 12. Hightower and Ricks held down the cornerback positions all season long to earn their defensive first team nods.
On the second team offense were junior quarterback Derrick Lewis and two of his top weapons in the backfield in junior Jeramiyah Scott and Micah Welch. In his first year as full-time starting QB, Lewis completed 82-of-144 passes for 1,141 yards and 14 touchdowns against only four interceptions. Welch led Baldwin in rushing yards with 503 on 82 carries while Scott finished with 500 all-purpose yards and eight touchdowns. Junior Keishawn Smith helped pave the way for all of them with his 78 percent lineman grade. Junior OL Terri Dumas earned All-Region Honorable Mention for his work this season.
Three Braves were named to the second team defense. Senior linebacker Eugene Brown (44 total tackles), junior defensive end Navion Clemons (6.5 tackles for loss) and freshman Tyrecus Harrison (4.5 tackles for loss) all earned spots on the second team. Senior strong safety Brandon Lee, sophomore defensive tackle Nasir Robinson and sophomore strong safety Tyquan Ingram all received All-Region Honorable Mention recognition.
