It is understandable why many Americans want Civil War statues removed. But does removing them help us forget the Civil War and slavery are important parts of American history? Rather than remove these monuments, I would suggest that we place educational centers near all of them, explaining what the Civil War and slavery were all about in our country, which claimed that all men are free and equal.
Should we not know that Brazil, Cuba and the USA were the only three countries where slavery was legal in the Americas shortly before the Civil War began? Should we not know about the cruelties and laws, which have been used keep Blacks less than equal? Should we not know about current efforts to eliminate teaching American history if it makes some students or their parents uncomfortable? We cannot accomplish any of this by merely removing statues.
