When the COVID-19 virus emerged, we learned first that no such virus has ever existed before and there was no treatment for it. That might have been the scariest thing we could hear.

Scientists all over the world have been working non-stop to find both a treatment for and a vaccine against, the terrible disease. Dr. Fauci warned us that it could be 12 to 18 months be for a vaccine could be developed, and he was right if he was following the pattern of vaccines in the past.

But the urgency for a vaccine has sped things up. Won’t it be wonderful if we could get something like a flu shot that would keep us from getting the virus? I would be one of the first in line at Walmart or Kroger to get my shot.

Until then, the virus is spreading. We try to take precautions like wearing masks and washing our hands often. On a trip last month when I stopped for gas I used a plastic bag to hold the pump handle and then threw the bag in the trash. Then I used hand sanitizer to kill any germs.

This is a virus that can kill, and none of us wants to get it. We really would like a vaccine against it.

We preachers have been warning about something else that can kill. The Apostle Paul said, “The wages of sin is death,” and he was absolutely right. Some people think that sin does not kill right away, but, like a virus, we get infected and it gets worse and worse. All of us die, but if we have never repented, our death is eternal.

But there is a great vaccine, one that is very old, but very effective. That vaccine is Jesus Christ.

“God so loved the world that he gave us his only begotten son, and whoever believes in him shall not perish, but have eternal life.”

Through Jesus, our sins are forgiven and we are made clean. Not only that, but we don’t have to worry about death; we will have life with God forever.

All of us preachers, and all of us Christians, hope you will take advantage of the vaccine against sin and death. It is old, but it sure is effective.
