An 81-year-old Blairsville, Georgia woman died a short time after her car slammed into the rear of an 18-wheel tractor tractor truck in Milledgeville on Tuesday morning, local authorities say.
The mishap took place about 8:30 a.m. at the intersection of North Columbia Street and Log Cabin Road.
Milledegeville Police Department Sgt. Thomas Smith identified the victim as Nancy Wilson.
The victim, who had been trapped inside her car following the wreck, was later freed by firefighters/first responders with Milledgeville Fire Rescue and Baldwin County Fire Rescue, before be treated at the scene by personnel with Grady Emergency Medical Services.
“She was awake and trying to talk when they were trying to get her out of the car,” Smith said.
Wilson was later taken by ambulance to Navicent Health Baldwin hospital in Milledgeville where she died.
Baldwin County Chief Deputy Coroner Ken Garland said Wilson died from blunt force trauma and was pronounced dead at 9:37 a.m. by Dr. Rebecca Gay.
Wilson was traveling northbound on North Columbia Street in a 2008 Ford Edge, according to Smith.
The victim rear-ended a flat-bed, 18-wheeler truck driven by Artro Castillo, of Naples, Florida. Castillo is a truck driver with ACM Express, a Texas company.
Smith explained how the crash happened in a telephone interview with The Union-Recorder:
“We believe Ms. Wilson suffered from some kind of medical condition,” Smith said. “I’m still waiting on some test results to come back to see what kind of medical condition she had, but she suffered some kind of medical condition and ran into the back of the truck.”
Smith pointed out that the exact cause of the crash remains under investigation.
