A traffic stop early Monday in the parking lot of a Baldwin County business led to the arrest of a Milledgeville man on drug charges.
The man was identified as Sparrow M. Hurt, 32, of the 300 block of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, according to an incident report filed by Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Shawn Isley.
Hurt was charged with Violation of the Georgia Controlled Substances Act for possession of marijuana, possession of a Scheduled II controlled substance, and possession of drug-related objects, jail records show.
After his arrest Hurt was taken to the Baldwin County Law Enforcement Center where he was jailed.
In his report, Isley said he watched as the driver of a 2012 BMW 750 LI drove across the centerline three different times. The driver was eventually stopped in the parking lot of Gil’s Package Shop at 2910 Heritage Place Road.
Isley said while approaching the car, he smelled the odor of marijuana coming from inside the car. The deputy said he asked the driver for his license, but he did not have them with him. The driver provided his name and birth, Isley said.
After Isley told Hurt he could smell marijuana, the suspect claimed he works at a “marijuana-friendly business” and that the marijuana smell was coming off the shirt he was wearing because he had just left work.
The deputy said he asked Hurt to step out of the car and informed him that he was going to search the car for anything illegal. When asked if there was anything illegal in the car, Hurt reportedly said no.
Isley said Hurt admitted he had a handgun in the passenger seat.
The car was then searched by Isley and Deputy Kevin Veal.
A small bag of a green leafy substance, believed to be marijuana, was found in the car’s glove compartment, along with a vape pen with THC oil, Isley said in his report.
The deputy said a Glock pistol also was found in the front passenger seat.
During a search of the car’s trunk, Isley said he found a large plastic container that contained two smaller plastic containers with a green leafy substance, also believed to be marijuana.
Deputies also discovered a bottle of Gangsta Lean THC oil, described on the label as 50 mg Cherry Punch, and a THC vape pen.
A set of digital scales also were found in the trunk, Isley said.
In the middle portion of the trunk was a pill bottle that had several pills inside of it.
