Construction is ongoing for two new Milledgeville eateries and one returner, and all three will be located within about a quarter-mile of one another.
McAlister’s Deli, Surcheros and Popeye’s will add to what is already a robust selection of dining options in the North Columbia Street/Highway 441 area near the Milledgeville Mall.
McAlister’s and Surcheros will be next-door neighbors along Roberson Mill Road while Popeye’s looks to be taking at least a portion of the long-vacant northeast corner of the North Columbia Street-Dunlap Road intersection.
McAlister’s is the farthest along in its construction. A representative with the company told The Union-Recorder via email that the restaurant, known largely for its sandwich offerings, is eyeing a March open date. No other details as to when the company might begin hiring or how many employees will be hired were given.
A Popeye’s spokesperson was even more tight-lipped about the fried chicken restaurant’s return to Milledgeville.
“The current information we can provide about this location is that it is expected to be opened sometime during the first half of the year,” the email read.
Popeye’s used to have a location at the corner of Roberson Mill Road and Garrett Way, but has since changed its branding from “Popeye’s Chicken & Biscuits” to “Popeye’s Louisiana Kitchen.” The restaurant made waves on a national scale last year when it targeted Peach State favorite Chick-fil-A in its new chicken sandwich advertising campaign.
Right in between McAlister’s and Applebee’s will be the Tex-Mex restaurant Surcheros that got its start in Douglas, Georgia in 2007. The operation has since expanded to several cities across the state, the closest in Dublin, with another planned for Macon according to the restaurant’s website. Surcheros is looking to open the doors to the Milledgeville location in May.
