Milledgeville’s newest restaurant names its top two priorities as offering fresh Tex-Mex and a hospitable dining environment.

Surcheros, a name derived from the Spanish words for “south” and “friend,” will open its doors at 108 Roberson Mill Road to the public 10:30 a.m. to kick off a week filled with prizes and giveaways for customers. The restaurant’s menu features burritos, quesadillas, tacos, chips and dips as well as other traditional Tex-Mex staples. 

“Everything is fresh,” Surcheros Director of Marketing Deborah Kirkland said when asked what the restaurant is known for. “We do not have any freezers in the building. All the vegetables are chopped every day, the meats are cooked every day, the chips are fried every day and all of the sauces are homemade every day.”

Milledgeville locals Kyle and Debbie Cullars are the franchisees for Surcheros’ 17th location. The restaurant got its start in 2007 in Douglas, Ga. and has since increased its footprint mostly across south Georgia. Milledgeville is Surcheros’ northernmost site for now, but there is another in the works for Alpharetta, which is north of Atlanta. 

The grand opening festivities kick off Monday when the first 100 paying guests will receive coupons for free food once a month for a year. Tuesday the first 100 paying guests get a Surcheros tumbler (limited to one per family). Prizes those first two days are available to guests 16 and over only. The new restaurant will keep the giveaways going all the way through its first week of being open to the public. 

“Every day there will be opportunities to win things,” Kirkland said.

With large numbers of customers expected to come in and try Milledgeville’s new offering, some safety measures have been put in place in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. The restaurant floor and pavement outside have been marked to encourage social distancing, and Kirkland said that customers are encouraged, but not required, to wear masks. All Surcheros employees will be required to wear masks themselves, seating will only be open to every other table, and outdoor dining is available under the restaurant’s covered patio. 

Milledgeville Surcheros’ hours will be 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and closed all day Sunday.
