The public is invited to attend the dedication ceremony of Floyd L. Griffin Jr. Street and the rededication of the Floyd L. Griffin Jr. Black Heritage Plaza in downtown Milledgeville.
The ceremony will take place at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 27. It will also be livestreamed.
A portion of the 100 block of West McIntosh Street to North Wilkinson Street to North Wayne Street is being renamed Floyd L. Griffin Jr. Street. The Black Heritage Plaza is also being renamed in Griffin’s honor. Both are located in what was once a thriving area for Black-owned businesses in downtown Milledgeville.
Griffin was the first Black man elected to the Georgia State Senate from Milledgeville and the first Black man to serve as the city’s mayor.
