ATLANTA, Ga. — Gunfire erupted from a high-rise apartment building in downtown Atlanta early Wednesday and law enforcement authorities say the man behind it was from Milledgeville.
The man with local ties to Milledgeville and Baldwin County is dead, apparently killed when he shot at officers with the Atlanta Police Department who had initially been called to investigate a report of gunfire at the apartment building.
The gunman used a rifle to shoot at police officers after they responded to the Atlantic House, a high-rise apartment building in midtown Atlanta. The gunman was identified as 32-year-old Jarvis Jarrett, according to a GBI press release.
The incident went from an investigation involving gunshots to an all-out active-shooter situation, which led to several streets being temporarily closed off as police officers and detectives, along with a SWAT team, were called out.
The active-shooter incident came to an end a short time later when Jarrett was shot to death by a police officer who returned gunfire.
Agents with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation are now investigating it as an officer-involved shooting.
The officer, whose name has yet to be made public, has been placed on administrative leave with pay pending the outcome of the investigation by the GBI.
A woman’s death, meanwhile, also is being probed by authorities. The woman’s body was found inside the apartment on the 21st floor, where Jarrett reportedly shot at police officers from the apartment balcony.
The woman’s death is currently being investigated by homicide detectives with the Atlanta Police Department. Her name had not been released by authorities as of Wednesday night.
The Union-Recorder has reached out to the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office in Atlanta and the Atlanta Police Department in an attempt to obtain more information.
The shooting of Jarrett is being probed as a separate investigation conducted solely by the GBI, which handles all officer-involved shootings in Georgia. The state law enforcement agency was requested by the Atlanta Police Department to look into the such shooting.
Authorities say police officers responded to a report of gunfire at the Atlantic House at 3:14 a.m. The apartment building is located in the 1100 block of Peachtree Street.
Police determined that gunshots were coming from the 21st floor of the apartment building, according to the GBI press release.
Officers approached the scene and saw a man, later identified as Jarrett, actively shooting from a balcony.
“Jarrett fired a rifle at responding officers, and at least one officer returned fire,” according to the GBI press release.
Police officers later discovered the bodies of a woman dead inside the apartment and Jarrett dead on a balcony.
The GBI is asking that anyone who may have videoed anything connected with the active-shooting incident to download the See Something, Send Something mobile app to please submit it.
