SPARTA, Ga. — The death of an inmate at Hancock State Prison near Sparta on Sunday afternoon is being investigated as an apparent suicide, state officials say.
The inmate was identified as Gerald Florence Jr., according to a press release sent to media outlets by the Georgia Department of Corrections.
Florence was found unresponsive in his cell about 4:40 p.m. Sunday.
Medical personnel were called to the prison and life-saving measures were performed.
The inmate was later taken to an area hospital where he later died about 7:45 p.m., according to the press release.
An investigation into Florence’s death is being conducted by investigators with the Georgia Department of Corrections. It is believed that he took his own life by suicide.
Florence was serving a life sentenced without parole on a conviction for murder, kidnapping, armed robbery, aggravated assault, and false imprisonment.
He was convicted of those crimes in Troup County.
