Lockerly Arboretum invites the public to enjoy a fall day spent learning about nature and its fascinating wonders at the annual Family Fun Day slated for Saturday, Oct. 19.
This year’s event will include learning about the arboretum’s greenhouse and the planting that occurs throughout the facility, a fossil dig, exhibits of fossils, leaf prints, animal tracks, pond water exploration, dissecting microscopes, a stream table (about erosion), and sieves and sang gauges.
Other scheduled activities include a reptile and birds display, study of macro-invertebrates, guided hikes, learning about native animals of Georgia, candle making, early American games, and much more.
The expertly guided hikes throughout the center are slated for 11 a.m., noon and 1 p.m. Comfortable shoes and clothing are recommended.
“Family Fun Day is a great way for families to experience Lockerly together,” said Jennifer Pollard, arboretum executive director. “Whether it is studying pond water, learning about animal tracks or reptiles, Family Fun Day is a hands-on, interactive experience for the whole family. We are pleased to be able to offer the event free-of-charge to this community.”
Although food will not be offered this year at the event, Lockerly provides numerous locations throughout the arboretum to enjoy a home-packed picnic lunch or take-out from a favorite downtown restaurant conveniently located nearby. The expansive lawn of Rose Hill Mansion, a shaded gazebo, or a cozy spot by the lily pad cloaked pond would each make a wonderful place to throw a worn quilt down and partake in seasonal delights.
The annual fundraiser, Scarecrows in the Arboretum, is currently on display, and voting will be open during Family Fun Day for a $0.25 donation to the education fund. Lockerly’s education department provides learning opportunities, including field trips and off-site programs, for thousands of school children each year from Baldwin and surrounding counties.
"We will have many of our education activities set up and stations run by GCSU students. Family Fun Day is intended to be fun and educational for the whole family,” said Natalie Helbling, education program coordinator. “Stations will include games, crafts, and many life science and earth science activities. We hope to see old and new faces join us this year for Family Fun Day.”
Lockerly Arboretum is located at 1534 Irwinton Road.
