Becky A. Powhatan, the executive vice president, business affairs, affiliate relations and general counsel for The Weather Channel, will be speaking today at the Women’s Leadership Forum. Her talk is entitled “Looking Back: What Worked and What Didn’t.”
The Women’s Leadership Forum is a program sponsored by the by the J. Whitney Bunting School of Business. The program was started eight years ago by the former dean of the business school, JoAnn Jones.
Each month, The forum brings together about 100 women in order to listen to an invited speaker. Women who are members of the forum are drawn from a wide variety of businesses and industries. Some work in education; others in health care; still others serve in business or professional roles.
Lurline West of the business school described the forum as a cross-section of Milledgeville. As diverse as the group is, the forum is held together by the common thread that each woman holds a leadership position in the community.
Powhatan attended college and law school at the University of Florida, where she now serves as a member of the school’s Board of Trustees. Before joining The Weather Channel in 1996, Powhatan worked as a business litigator for 12 years and as a corporate counsel for Landmark Communications, Inc., a media company.
At The Weather Channel, she wears many hats. Powhatan is its general counsel, which means she is in charge of dealing with all legal issues that face the company and its subsidiaries. As head of the affiliate sales and operating teams, she oversees the distribution of networks. Finally, Powhatan is a member of the company’s Executive Committee, which decides the long-term operational and strategic goals of The Weather Channel.
