The state will hold a clemency hearing Monday for condemned murderer John Washington Hightower.

The hearing is scheduled for Monday, the day before Hightower is set for execution — 7 p.m. Tuesday at Georgia Diagnostic and Classification Prison in Jackson.

Hightower was convicted and sentenced to death by lethal injection for the 1987 slaying of his wife and two stepdaughters.

Hightower’s attorney, Jeffrey L. Ertel, will request the mercy of the parole board. It is the last step, barring a stay from the U.S. Supreme Court, before Hightower’s execution.
