Gen. Lafayette addresses the crowd at Friday morning's ceremony.

Milledgeville residents are honoring the 190th anniversary of General Lafayette's 1825 visit to the city. Events kicked off with a parade Friday at 10 a.m.

More than 2,600 students from the Baldwin School District and GMC participated in the parade. 

BHS band performed the “Star Spangled Banner” and the GMC band played the French national anthem.

Political remarks from today and from the past were also read along with proclamations from Acting Mayor Jeanette Walden and Dr. Jay Hodges, who read the Mayor of Milledgeville's welcoming speech, as presented in 1825 by Intendant Peter F. Jaillet."

At the conclusion of the ceremony, there will be a community picnic on the grounds of GMC. 

Students will eat lunch on Davenport Field and the general public will eat in the picnic area set up on the GMC west lawn. 

Festivities will also be held Friday evening. 

There will be a sunset gathering at the Old Governor's Mansion at 6 p.m. and a concert on the campus of Georgia College.
