Did you know that Baldwin county has its share of people who are one paycheck away from financial crisis? It’s all too true. All it takes is for the car to break down, for the water heater to leak, for an unexpected illness to hit…or other unplanned event, and all of a sudden you can’t pay that utility bill or can’t meet this month’s rent. Most of us will never have to face the prospect of having the electricity turned off or of becoming homeless. But there are many in our county who live with that possibility on a day to day basis.
And that’s where the Helping Hands Society comes in. Each year we assist hundreds of Baldwin county families who are struggling to make ends meet. Our screeners meet with families once a week to determine their need and can help pay utilities, rent and housing costs on a one-time basis. In addition, we provide Christmas gifts to at least 100 children each year who might not receive a present. And we distribute food baskets during the Thanksgiving and Christmas season. That support can make a huge difference to a family that normally is getting by, but just needs some support during a difficult time.
As you might expect, funds are needed to keep this worthy program operational. We depend on Kroger rewards, FEMA, parishioner donations and community fundraising. One such community fundraiser, “Uncork your Support” is planned for January 18th from 6-9pm and is open to the public. The Georgia College University Banquet room will be the site of a wine and beer tasting with 6 food pairings. In addition, there will be raffles and door prizes throughout the evening. Tickets are $50.00 per person and must be purchased in advance. For tickets contact Denise Johnson at 454-75
