A 39-year-old Baldwin County man was killed in a two-car, head-on collision Saturday morning in Baldwin County, local and state authorities say.
The crash, which happened about 8:45 a.m. on Georgia Route 22 near Water Tower Road, also injured a Hancock County woman who was driving the other car.
The man killed was identified as Rodriquez Driskell, of the 1000 block of Sparta Highway, Milledgeville, according to Trooper Jalin Anderson of the Georgia State Patrol post in Milledgeville.
Driskell was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after the mishap by Baldwin County Deputy Coroner Ken Garland, Trooper Anderson said.
The deceased victim was driving a 2011 Chevrolet Aveo eastbound on Georgia Route 22, while the other car was a 2009 Chrysler 300 driven by Bernice Watson, 54, of the 3300 block of Hitchcock Cemetery Road, Sparta, Trooper Anderson said.
Watson was traveling westbound on Ga. Route 22 at the time.
Trooper Anderson, who investigated the fatal crash, said it had been raining prior to the mishap and that Driskell was driving too fast for conditions at the time.
“It had just stopped raining, but the roadway was still wet,” Trooper Anderson said.
The trooper said Driskell was in the process of negotiating a curve when he lost control of his car and veered over into the westbound lane of Watson’s car before the two cars collided.
Following the impact, Driskell’s car left the shoulder of the roadway.
“It then rotated counterclockwise and slid backwards into a tree,” Trooper Anderson said.
Watson was treated at the scene by firefighters/first responders with Baldwin County Fire Rescue and personnel with Grady Emergency Medical Services before she was taken by ambulance to Navicent Health Baldwin hospital in Milledgeville for further treatment of her injuries, Trooper Anderson said.
The trooper said there were no passengers in either of the cars.
