EATONTON, Ga. — A head-on collision between two SUVs at the intersection of U.S. Highway 441 North and Bethel Church Road in Putnam County claimed the life of an elderly woman, local authorities say.
The crash also injured two others, both of whom were rushed to area hospitals following the wreck that happened shortly after 3 p.m.
Putnam County Sheriff Howard R. Sills identified the woman killed as Violet Kathryn Dukes, 83, of the 200 block of Long Shoals Road, Eatonton.
Dukes’ husband, Robert Lewis Dukes, was injured and taken by ambulance to an Athens hospital.
A third person also was injured.
Sills identified that woman as Rosetta Samantha Harris, 48, of Eatonton.
Harris, who along with Lewis, was treated at the scene by firefighters/first responders with Putnam County Fire Rescue and personnel with Putnam County Emergency Medical Services.
Sills said Harris was flown from the scene by an AirEvac helicopter to The Medical Center, Navicent Health in Macon for treatment of injuries.
The sheriff said Robert Lewis Dukes was driving a 2012 Toyota Highlander, while Harris was driving a 2007 Chevrolet Blazer.
As of Tuesday afternoon, the collision remained under investigation by deputies with the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office.
