Congressman Jody Hice (GA-10) honored Hancock County resident Della Smith as the “Hice Headliner” for the month of September on Wednesday, Sept. 2. Each month, he recognizes one outstanding local citizen who goes above and beyond to help their neighbors and strengthen the community.
Smith is the founder of Neighbors Caring About Neighbors, a local organization with a mission to “provide compassionate assistance and resources to those in need, especially the elderly and families with children.” Among the nonprofit’s many initiatives include the installation of "blessing boxes" throughout the community, holding items such as non-perishables, books, and diapers for those in need, the provision of uniforms for students returning to school, and the distribution of winter coats for children at Christmas.
“For years and during these unprecedented times, Della has worked tirelessly to ensure that her neighbors are cared for,” said Hice. “She has arranged for food delivery to senior households, drivers to transport patients to healthcare appointments, and even landscapers to cut grass for those who are unable to do so themselves. I’m incredibly honored to recognize Della Smith for the impact that she makes each and every day in Hancock County. She is truly shaping her community into a better place.”
In response to receiving this award, Smith replied, “It's just who I am. My grandmother gave and served others in this community. My parents were poor, but they shared the vegetables from their garden with others in need. I believe when God has blessed us to have the ability to help someone we should help, even if it's just picking up the phone and uplifting another.”
