EATONTON, Ga. — A 68-year-old Greene County man was apparently killed instantly after his motorcycle collided with a Chevrolet Tahoe at a busy intersection in Putnam County on Thursday afternoon, authorities say.
The collision happened shortly after 4 p.m. at the intersection of Ga. Route 16, also known as the Sparta Highway, and Pea Ridge Road, according to Putnam County Sheriff’s Office Col. Russell Blenk.
The chief deputy identified the deceased victim as Charles Bailey, of Greensboro.
Blenk said Bailey was pronounced dead at the scene.
The deceased man’s wife, Rita, 67, who was riding the motorcycle with her husband, was seriously injured and later flown by AirEvac helicopter from the scene to The Medical Center of Navicent Health in Macon.
Firefighters, first responders with Putnam County Fire Rescue, along with personnel from the Putnam County Emergency Medical Services responded to the collision.
Blenk said Charles Bailey was driving a 2013 Harley Davidson eastbound on Ga. Rt. 16. The 2003 Chevrolet Tahoe, driven by Caed Wooten, 22, of Milledgeville, was traveling westbound.
The motorcycle struck the right front quarter panel of the Tahoe as Wooten was making a left turn onto Pea Ridge Road, Blenk told The Union-Recorder in a telephone interview Friday.
Wooten, who was the lone occupant in the Tahoe, was not injured.
The fatal crash remained under investigation by the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office as of Friday afternoon.
