A deputy with the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office pulled up to a store Saturday night to purchase an item and interrupted an armed robbery in progress, authorities say.
The deputy fired at least one gunshot, but no one was injured. The two people authorities say were in the process of robbing the store at gunpoint were captured a short time later.
The robbery happened at 5:39 p.m. at the Marathon Service Station at the intersection of U.S. Highway 441 and Northpoint Road, according to Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office Detective Capt. Brad King.
“The deputy was confronted with an armed robbery in progress,” King told The Union-Recorder in a telephone interview from the scene. “He exited his vehicle. The clerk was able to get out and run away from the store. As the two perpetrators attempted to leave the store, he (the deputy) fired a single gunshot.”
The deputy managed to hold the robbery suspects at gunpoint until other deputies and officers with the Milledgeville Police Department could get there and render assistance.
The robbery suspects were immediately taken into custody and taken to the Baldwin County Law Enforcement Center.
Agents with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Region 6 Office in Milledgeville are now working the officer-involved shooting.
The name of the deputy involved and the names of a man and woman taken into custody at the scene of the robbery have not yet been made public.
“We called the GBI in because of the officer-involved shooting and they are currently still working the crime scene now,” King said.
Interviews also are being conducted at the sheriff’s office with other individuals at this time, he added.
“We are extremely pleased with how this came to an end with no one being injured,” King said. “It was a very tense situation for a while there. We’re just happy no one was hurt and especially glad that our deputy is OK.”
