The death of an inmate at Baldwin State Prison near Milledgeville on Wednesday remains under investigation, state authorities say.
The identity of the inmate or details surrounding the cause of his death have yet to be released, according to Lori Benoit, manager of the Office of Public Affairs with the Georgia Department of Corrections in Forsyth.
“We can confirm an inmate death at Baldwin State Prison,” Benoit told The Union-Recorder via an email Wednesday afternoon. “The death is being investigated by the Georgia Department of Corrections Office of Professional Standards, along with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, as standard procedure.”
Benoit said details were unavailable since the investigation was ongoing.
Special Agent Joe Wooten, agent in-charge of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Region 6 Office in Milledgeville told the newspaper that his office had offered crime scene assistance only.
More information is expected to be released by state authorities concerning the death of the inmate Thursday.
