A number of Milledgeville residents were placed under a mandatory boil water advisory Tuesday.

Unlike previous occasions when a water main burst, this time was much different.

The culprit turned out to be due to road repairs being made in a residential section of the city, according to a press release sent out to local media by Milledgeville City Manager Hank Griffeth.

The water main was “severely” damaged, causing water pressure in the affected areas to drop to dangerously low water levels, Griffeth said.

Residents living in the following neighborhoods have had their water service interrupted: Greystone Arbor subdivision, including Greystone Drive, Stone Crest Drive, Lodestone Drive, Peeble Hollow Drive, and Arbor Way.

Griffeth explained that when water levels reach dangerously low levels that a potential health hazard may exist in the areas where there is zero water pressure from back-flow and or siphonage of water of unknown quality into the water distribution system.

The city manager said in order to assure the public is protected from any health hazard, the residents living in the affected areas must boil all water prior to use for drinking, cooking or preparing baby food.

Water should be boiled for at least one minute after reaching what is known as a rolling boil.

“Citizens should continue to boil water until they are notified by the water utility that the water system has been restored to full operation, and that the microbiological quality of the water in the distribution system is safe for human consumption,” Griffeth said.
