Surplus books from the Baldwin County School District will be available to the public free of charge this week.
The annual book giveaway will be Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Friday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Any books left over after Friday, Oct. 16 will be recycled.
Normally this event takes place inside the school district’s central warehouse, but nothing is normal this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We have to do things a little differently this year,” BCSD head of purchasing Judi Battle said. “We have coordinated a drive-thru book giveaway where we were able to sort out the books, put them outside and let people drive up and take the books. They are already bagged by grade level. We wanted to limit the contact in the warehouse and keep people from spending a lot of time outside their vehicles.”
Books will be organized outside the warehouse, located near the Board of Education building, available for pickup at the times previously mentioned. Offerings include classroom and student textbooks as well as fiction and non-fiction works from school media centers. Members of the public are invited to take multiple bags with them from the book giveaway.
