An argument between a father and his son Saturday at a residence in Baldwin County resulted in a fight and both men subsequently being arrested by local authorities.
The incident happened at a residence on the 500 block of Sparta Highway between 9:52 p.m. and 10:20 p.m.
Marvin Shawn Browning, 41; and Jerry Lee Melton, age unavailable, both of the 500 block of Sparta Highway, were arrested, according to an incident report filed by Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Jonathan Graham.
Both men were charged with affray or fighting, records show. Browning also was charged with disorderly conduct.
Both men were taken to the Baldwin County Law Enforcement Center where they were jailed.
Graham said when he arrived at the residence that both men were yelling loudly outside the residence.
The deputy described Browning as “extremely belligerent” and intoxicated.
Browning was allegedly upset with his son about childcare issues, Graham said in his report.
The deputy said as Browning was standing in front of him he saw that he had sustained several scrapes on his hands and what appeared to be blood and dirt on his face.
“As I was trying to calm and talk with Browning about the incident, he became more upset,” Graham said. “He began cursing at Deputy (Ashley) Brown and myself, as well as flailing his arms in a wild manner.”
Browning was placed in handcuffs when he reportedly tried to resist.
Graham later talked with Melton about what had happened.
The man said his father was heavily intoxicated and yelling at him about child care issues related to his daughter.
Melton said Browning threw a hat at him that struck him in the face during the altercation, according to the incident report.
Graham said Melton later told him that he took Browning to the ground and struck him.
Other family members eventually pulled the two men apart.
Melton reportedly told the deputy that he and Browning went outside and began shouting at each other. Melton accused Browning of grabbing a large wrench. Melton said that was when he left the residence and called the sheriff’s office for help.
A verbal argument later ensued between Melton and some of his family members in the presence of deputies.
Graham said he told Melton several times to stop shouting and arguing, but Melton didn’t comply. He eventually was also arrested.
