From Staff Reports

The Georgia Department of Veterans Service will honor those who have given their lives in service to their country on Thursday at noon at the Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery off Carl Vinson

Highway.

Sponsored in part by the Civil Air Patrol, the purpose of the ceremony is to “get the local community involved with patriotism in honoring our fallen heroes, honor all active duty servicemen and women now servicing throughout the world, and teach our children the value of what it means to be an American and the value of freedom,” according to a press release issued by Ernie Simons, cemetery director.

The program began 15 years ago at Arlington National Cemetery to honor those soldiers buried on the property.

Since that time, all national and state veterans cemeteries have started similar programs.

Five wreaths will be laid for Thursday’s ceremony, honoring Army, Navy, Marine, Air Force and Coast Guard services.
