County tree and limb pickup service still available

MILLEDGEVILLE — The Baldwin County Public Works Department is still offering tree and limb debris pickup service stemming from the February’s Winter Storm Pax.

This temporary public service extends through April 15.

Those able to take storm debris to the county’s local convenience centers are urged to continue to do so. This greatly assists Public Works by allowing them to serve citizens who cannot haul their debris there.

To ensure pickup, debris should be moved from private property to the public right-of-way no closer than five feet from the edge of the road.

No debris can be picked up from private property.

Residents are asked to call 478-445-4791 to notify the county when they have materials placed in the proper area ready for removal.

Only tree and limb debris will be taken. No construction material should be placed on public right-of-way.

Baldwin County’s timber could only take so much icy buildup from last month’s storm. Broken limbs and even entire trees toppled to the ground damaging property, power lines and leaving thousands temporarily without necessary electricity supply.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced March 6 that federal disaster aid is available to the State of Georgia to supplement state, tribal, and local recovery efforts in the area affected Feb. 10-14 by the severe winter storm.

The “disaster” declaration made federal funding available on a cost-sharing basis for emergency work and the repair or replacement of facilities damaged by Winter Storm Pax.

Baldwin and nearby Hancock, Jones and Washington Counties join 35 others on Georgia’s FEMA relief list.

Milledgeville-Baldwin County Emergency Management Agency director Troy Reynolds said City of Milledgeville and county debris removal and disposal are allowable costs for reimbursement. Disaster relief reimbursement should come to Baldwin County parties affected within six months.
