Milledgeville's downtown is a Great American Main Street Award semifinalist

MILLEDGEVILLE — Each year the National Main Street Center recognizes exceptional Main Street communities whose successes serve as a model for comprehensive, preservation-based commercial district revitalization with the Great American Main Street Award. Winners must show an overall strength of the local program in creating an exciting place to live, work, play and visit. A seven-member jury comprised of nationally recognized Main Street specialists had the difficult task of determining which applicants would advance to the next round.

This year the National Main Street Center received the most applications since 2009. Monday the top 10 semifinalists were announced for the Great American Main Street Award. Milledgeville was one of the 10 semifinalists and the only community selected in the entire state of Georgia.

“This is a true honor for the Main Street staff, City of Milledgeville, board members, business and property owners and citizens of our community. To be chosen as a semifinalist really proves that the work being done in downtown Milledgeville is exemplary and being noticed. The City has invested in this program for years and this award would really solidify the importance of that support. I hope others feel proud of what is happening downtown and support the area as we continue to grow and build upon what we have," Carlee Schulte, the Milledgeville Main Street Director said.

The winners of the Great American Main Street Award will be announced during the 2014 National Main Street Conference Opening Plenary on May 18. Currently there are only two other communities in Georgia that can boast their recognition as a Great American Main Street. Last year, Schulte was awarded a scholarship to attend this conference and is hopeful to bring the Great American Main Street Award home from the conference for the City of Milledgeville.
