L.O.V.E. for Haiti hosts community event to support Haitian students, teachers

The nonprofit organization L.O.V.E. for Haiti is planning a community event next week in hopes of raising enough donations to benefit educators, children and families at a small non-government elementary school in Montrouis, Haiti.

The family fun day is slated to kick off at noon Saturday, March 22 at the Oconee River Greenway. Admission is free though donations are accepted. Game tickets can be purchased for $1 for four tickets.

A Kids Helping Kids Carnival will entertain children until 3 p.m. with a bounce house, carnival games, face painting, craft projects, cookie decorating, prizes, snow cones, hot dogs and hamburgers. New and gently worn shoes and children and teen clothing can also be dropped off to support Soles4Souls Inc.

During the event, Creekside Elementary School chorus students and the Midway Elementary School dance team will perform. Live music will begin at 2 p.m. and continue with a different band on the hour until 6 p.m., including Jennifer and Daniel Mitchell, Charlie Adams and Jim Chapman, Down Home Soul featuring Lindsey Hornsby and Scott Little.

“Money that is raised from this event will be used for summer projects when we travel to Haiti in July. We’re hoping to build one, maybe two, additional classrooms depending on how much money we raise. Right now there are three classrooms, and two of the classes are outside with metal sheeting as its wall,” said Dianna Perdue, cofounder of the organization. “We need to block those two classes in and build an additional classroom so the fourth-graders can to move into fifth grade. If we can’t, then the kids will have to find another school to attend, which is just not an option.”

Founded in March 2013, L.O.V.E. (Life, Opportunity, Verse and Education) for Haiti provides financial support and resources to Reymax Institute, which provides free education to 90 Haitian students in kindergarten through fourth grade.
