UR ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Sophomore carries Bulldogs’ offense

MILLEDGEVILLE — Contributing to Georgia Military Prep School baseball’s recent offensive success, sophomore Tyler McCartee has earned Athlete of the Week for his performances in the last five contests.

McCartee is currently one of the most consistent batters for the Bulldogs against the likes of Monticello, Washington and Lincoln counties.

The sophomore shortstop and pitcher went 2-for-4 at the plate against WACO Monday night, and 1-for-2 against Lincoln the following day — he also currently leads the team in steals after the Tuesday night’s game.

“He did well in both of them this week,” head coach Allen Simmons said. “Ever since last Wednesday against Monticello, he’s just been crushing it.

“He’s really been seeing the ball well and hitting it really well,” he added. “I think the hard work is paying off. When he’s on, he’s on — he can hit. It’s just a testament to hard work.”

Only in his second season at the varsity level, it is clear that McCartee’s work ethic is not an issue.

“Me, Patrick Lewis and Dawson Huff have been in the cage a lot on Sundays and on the weekend days,” he said, “when our opponent is out there working and getting better.”

According to both Simmons and McCartee, the young talent’s best game this season has come against WACO on Monday.

“That was probably one of my best games this year with hitting,” McCartee said. “That game really stuck out to me.”

Beginning with the matchup with Monticello last week, McCartee has really come into his own, igniting the Bulldogs’ offense.

“Going into the first game, I wasn’t doing that well hitting, but I was trying too hard,” the sophomore said. “You have to be confident in yourself and you can’t psych yourself out before you get up there.
