Speech-language pathologist expands services to local area

MILLEDGEVILLE — LaShonya Lacount has been an advocate for children and adults with disabilities for more than 10 years. A Georgia state licensed speech-language pathologist, she works to give a voice to individuals who are not able to communicate their needs and wants.

“My passion started when I was taking care of my grandmother who had suffered from strokes, and I had several aunts that had strokes,” she said. “I wanted to learn the field so I could help children who are born developmentally delayed and adults with speech and language disorders. The earlier a person gets treatments, the better they will be able to perform later on in life.”

Lacount evaluates and treats children and adults diagnosed with speech, language, voice, fluency and swallowing disorders. Currently located in Austell, Lacount plans to reach out to families in the Milledgeville-Baldwin County area by offering her travel therapy services starting in May. If enough individuals in the local area have a need, she plans to open a clinic.

“I was able to connect with another therapist in the Milledgeville area who told me that there’s a great need for a speech-language pathologist. I know in Milledgeville and surrounding rural areas it’s harder to retain those people to work,” she said. “There are dozens of children and adults that either don’t have transportation, time or finances to travel to Macon or Atlanta. I’ll be able to bring the services to the area. I hope to eventually build a centralized clinic where I can have equipment and people can come in and get specific treatments done.”

Lacount accepts a variety of insurance plans for therapeutic services, including Medicaid, Aetna, WellCare, Amerigroup, Humana and Peach State Health Plan.

“I’m currently working on accepting more insurance as far as Medicare and Blue Cross Blue Shield,” she said. “I’m also accepting new patients to help build my caseload.”
