First Friday to ‘Celebrate Our Roots’

This week’s First Friday event will “Celebrate Our Roots” as Milledgeville-Baldwin County’s history will be remembered and highlighted from 6 to 9 p.m. in downtown.

The Milledgeville-Baldwin County Convention & Visitors Bureau will give free trolley rides and tours to some of the historic sites in the downtown area. From 6 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, the trolley tours will make stops at the Georgia’s Old Capital Museum, the Old Governor’s Mansion, Sallie Ellis Davis House and the John Marlor House. Trolley pickup will be located at the crosswalk on West Hancock Street, in front of Buffingtons.

Georgia’s Old Capital Museum will display the exhibit “From Broomstick to Musket: Women of the South, 1861-1865,” which tells the stories of eight southern women during the Civil War and their roles, from slave to soldier to spy.

“Doodle’s Cupcake Bakery will be open for First Friday. They will have their very own cupcake extraordinaire and resident artist Andrea Sowell on hand,” said Carlee Schulte, director of Milledgeville Main Street. “She will be exhibiting her artwork in the purple room. First Friday-goers are encouraged to drop by to be wowed and while there grab a warm beverage and something sweet.”

Downtown visitors can also view historic images of the community in merchant shops at the corner of West Hancock and South Wayne streets.

“The historic photographs were generously donated for the public's viewing pleasure by Jane Knight and Deborah Knight Jackson,” Schulte said. “The photos were taken by their Uncle Richard Knight.”

Several organizations have signed up to participate in the March First Friday activities to help educate the public about their mission, including Georgia College Cure. Members of Georgia College Miracle, the year-round organization that raises awareness and support for The Children’s Hospital at the Medical Center of Central Georgia, will also have an information table setup and encourage passersby to get involved in the cause. L.O.V.E. for Haiti will join the event, selling arts and crafts to benefit the people of Haiti.
