UPDATE: Armed robbery at Radio Shack

Suspects still at-large

MILLEDGEVILLE — Prior to a busy Monday lunch hour in the Wal-Mart area of North Columbia Street, an armed robbery rocked Radio Shack.

A store employee was restrained at gunpoint before two suspects stole phones worth thousands of dollars.

Milledgeville Police Chief Dray Swicord said an emergency call came in around 11:30 a.m.

After reviewing Wal-Mart surveillance video, police noticed that a black Nissan Maxima or Altima vehicle drove to the front of the store.

“A black male went inside. Then the car drove around to the rear of the building,” Swicord said. “It appears that a lady got out of the car and walked back around to the front of the store.”

The female Radio Shack employee told investigators that the man “mulled around” the store before asking for some speaker wire.

Once the female suspect got inside the store, Swicord said the man drew a firearm.

“He pulled a gun, put it to her back and took her into the office,” the police chief said. “He zip tied her hands behind her back and took her keys.”

Swicord said it appears the armed robbery suspects only stole “high-end, expensive phones” valued at more than $30,000.

The man and woman escaped out the back door, according to police.

Swicord said the suspects' faces weren't covered.

“I wouldn't think they were from here, but I don't know,” he said Monday afternoon.

The store clerk suffered no injuries during the incident, according to police.

At press time Monday, investigators were searching for additional surveillance video in the area. Radio Shack doesn't have security cameras.

“The only thing we are depending on right now is the Wal-Mart [video],” Swicord said Monday afternoon. “You can make out colors, but it's hard to read a tag.”

MPD officials are aware of similar incidents happening across Georgia and several other states of late. Anyone any information in reference to the robbery is asked to call the MPD Tip Line at 478-414-4413.
