BHS alumna sings to success

Nica Nashae concert May 24 at BHS

MILLEDGEVILLE — Nica Nashae, 24, is following her dream of taking her talent and turning it into her career.

Nashae was born in Corpus Christi, Texas but was raised in Milledgeville. She has been singing all her life and from a young age, she knew she was born to sing. Her first performance was at church at age 5, singing the gospel song "Prodigal Son."

Her passion for entertaining audiences continued from there.

"When we moved to Milledgeville I was about 6 years old. I continued to sing in churches and all kinds of talent shows and programs in the community," Nashae said.

After graduating from Baldwin High School in 2007, Nashae landed an opportunity to perform with Grammy award-winning singer Chris Brown on the BET show 106 & Park.

Once the performance bug bit her, her journey on a path to a singing career ensued.

"I feel like this is more of a calling and not just my talent," she said.

Nashae auditioned for the FOX show American Idol producers in Atlanta and received a callback in September.

"At first, I wasn't going to try out for it. I had tried out for American Idol three times before and never received a callback, but this was my time to shine," she said.

Idol is a TV vehicle that helps discover new solo recording artists based on votes by viewers and critiques by celebrity judges. The winning contestant receives a record deal with a major label.

During her time on American Idol Season 13, Nashae said the experience can be best described as bittersweet.

"It was great being a part of American Idol because it was sweet to get the opportunity to get exposed to millions of people and build relationships within the music industry, but it was bittersweet getting eliminated."

Nashae performed in front of celebrity judges Keith Urban, Jennifer Lopez and Harry Connick Jr. She said Lopez took a liking to her and expressed her disappointment when she was eliminated.
