Candidates to speak at Patriots meeting

MILLEDGEVILLE — The Milledgeville Area Patriots will welcome local, state and national political candidates at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Victory Baptist Church.

Derrick Grayson, Republican candidate for Senate, two Republican United States Congressional candidates, Brian Slowinski and Mitchell Swan, state school superintendent candidate Dr. Mary Kay Bacallao and Alan Thrower, incumbent candidate for state court Judge of Baldwin County, will attend.

With the primary quickly approaching, May 20, excitement is at an all-time high.

The political forum will complete the first round of candidates vying for their respective positions.

With a runoff election possibility in both the Senate and Congressional races, the Milledgeville Area Patriots want to be the source for providing this politically informative opportunity to Baldwin County and other counties as well.

Minister Derrick E. Grayson is a Republican and a Georgia native running for the U.S. Senate.

"There is no doubt that many Americans are struggling and hurting. Despite all the promises by our elected officials, career politicians, and so-called leaders, many people all across this great nation are finding it more and more difficult to cope with the various challenges brought about by out of touch politicians. The erosion of personal freedom and liberty as a result of federal policy and legislation is alarming,” Grayson said in a press release. “Instead of encouraging job creation, current policies promote a culture of dependence on big government and welfare programs. It is time we go back to the conservative values and the principles of limited government and individual responsibility that helped to make America a great nation.”

Slowinski, a conservative Tea Party Republican, said he understands the burden placed on citizens by a high taxing, big spending government intent on perpetuating itself. The District 10 Congressional candidate sees “frugal conservatism” as the way out of trouble.

Slowinski is the past chairman of the Columbia County Republican Party. He is a Republican congressional district treasurer and on the state committee of the Georgia Republican Party.

Some platform highlights include removing IRS/Income Tax, supporting the Constitution and using American energy.

The other visiting Congressional hopeful, Swan, stands beside a “star plan” with five laws: resolve illegal immigration; the reform federal income tax system; reform the social security system; reduce federal government; and reform the federal workforce.

Swan is a colonel in the U.S. Marine Corps reserves and an Athens resident.

His last active-duty assignment was developing U.S. Policy for the Middle East as a staff officer with U.S. Central Command, Tampa, Fla.

As a professor of math, science and technology education, school superintendent challenger Bacallao brought attention to the fact that the new Common Core math standards are one to two years behind.

She plans to stop the federal standardization of education in Georgia by using placement tests instead of government dictated tests based on the Common Core.

As a member of the Fayette County School Board, she founded the Educational Freedom Coalition to restore liberty to local schools.

Current Baldwin State Court Judge Alan Thrower attended Baldwin County Public Schools, graduating from Baldwin High School in 1970.

He received by Bachelor of Arts degree, Magna Cum Laude, from the University of Georgia.

Thereafter, Thrower earned his Juris Doctor at Mercer University.

After graduating law school, he returned to Milledgeville and started a law practice in 1979 that continues to this day.

Thrower has held the state court position since 1998 and is running opposed for the first time by way of challenger Carl Cansino.

You do not have to be a member of the Patriots organization to attend. Anyone can come out and meet the candidates.

The Milledgeville Area Patriots meet the first Thursday of each month, 6:30 p.m., at Victory Baptist Church - 640 Meriwether Road, NW. For more information call Janice Westmoreland at 478-454-7927.
