MILLEDGEVILLE — As the winter storm warning continues through Wednesday afternoon for much of central Georgia, local schools are monitoring the inclement weather to decide Wednesday’s schedule.
According to the National Weather Service, a winter storm warning for snow, sleet and freezing rain remains in effect from 10 a.m. Tuesday to 1 p.m. Wednesday across middle Georgia.
The Baldwin County public school system will dismiss elementary students, faculty and staff at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, and middle and high school at noon. All schools will be closed Wednesday. The school system will send out any updates or changes to the schedule via its emergency notification system.
Georgia Military College Prep School students are scheduled to dismiss at 11:50 a.m. Tuesday. The basketball game versus Hancock County at 4:30 p.m. is also canceled, but will be rescheduled at a later time. GMC Junior College classes at the Milledgeville campus that begin after 12:30 p.m. Tuesday are canceled.
A decision regarding Wednesday’s schedule for all GMC employees and students will be announced Tuesday. Parents and students can keep up-to-date with the latest announcements and class assignments by checking their e-mail and the school Facebook page.
John Milledge Academy will follow the regular school schedule Tuesday, but all afternoon activities are canceled. A decision about Wednesday’s schedule will also be announced Tuesday.
Sinclair Christian Academy will release students at noon Tuesday. Classes are slated to resume at 10 a.m. Wednesday, but may be canceled after further monitoring of the weather.
Classes at all Central Georgia Technical College locations will proceed as regularly scheduled Tuesday. Updates on campus and center closures will be made via e-mail, college website, and Facebook and Twitter pages.
All day and evening classes at Helms College and the School of Health, located at the Milledgeville Mall, also canceled classes Wednesday.
As of press time Monday, Georgia College was still continuing to monitor the winter storm watch and no announcements had been made about class reschedulings.
Parents and students are encouraged to check their e-mail, school website and Facebook and Twitter pages for the latest information. Alerts of any changes will be sent through their school’s emergency notification system.
The Putnam County Charter School System will close at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday due to the winter weather. All after school activities are canceled as well, including any scheduled athletic events. A decision about school on Wednesday will be made by 5 p.m. Tuesday. Updates will be posted to the school system’s website.
The National Weather Service predicts snow accumulations of 1 to 3 inches with locally higher amounts. Sleet accumulations of up to 1/2 inch.
Wintery precipitation is expected to begin late Tuesday and could last through early Wednesday. The heaviest precipitation will be Tuesday night.
In Baldwin County, a chance of rain and sleet before 2 p.m. Tuesday, then sleet between 2 and 5 p.m., then rain and sleet after 5 p.m. The high is forecasted near 36 degrees with northwest winds around 10 mph, and gusts as high as 20 mph. The chance of precipitation is 80 percent.
Rain, freezing rain and sleet before 8 p.m. Tuesday, then snow. The evening’s low is expected to be around 26 degrees with north winds 5 to 10 mph. The chance of precipitation is 100 percent.
For Wednesday, snow is likely, mainly before 8 a.m. The high is expected to be near 39 degrees with north winds from 5 to 10 mph, becoming light northeast in the afternoon. Wednesday night is predicted to be partly cloudy with a low around 18 degrees.
Snow and ice covered roads will make travel difficult or impossible beginning this afternoon lasting through Wednesday morning. Light icing will make sidewalks and walkways treacherous.
A winter storm warning for snow, sleet and freezing rain means severe winter weather conditions are expected or occurring. The amount of snow that is forecast will make travel dangerous. Only travel in an emergency if you must travel. Keep an extra flashlight, food and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.
