Man sentenced for destroying jail sprinkler

MILLEDGEVILLE — Destroying a prison system sprinkler while in solitary confinement gave Adam Tory Hill five more years to serve Tuesday.

Hill was indicted last fall by a Baldwin County grand jury for burglary in the first degree, felony theft by receiving stolen property, possession of firearm by a convicted felon and interference with government property.

Ocmulgee Judicial Circuit Assistant District Attorney Leonard Myers prosecuted Hill on the interference charge and asked for the maximum legal sentence.

Myers said Superior Court Judge Hugh Wingfield gave him “almost everything he asked for.”

Tuesday’s sentence is consecutive to the two years Hill was already serving.

“(Hill) could parole, but he did receive five years confinement,” Myers said.

Hill was accused of breaking into a local firefighter’s Milledgeville home and stealing more than 20 assault and tactical weapon type firearms.

“So (Hill) is a three-time felon at that point,” Myers said. “He then turns around while he’s in the jail and damages the sprinkler system in an isolation cell. He attempted to grab the sprinkler head, and when he did, it triggered the fire alarm, dumped water into his cell and they had to shut the entire system off leaving half of the building without fire protection.”

Hill’s convicted felon status includes counts from Hancock, Baldwin and Jones counties.

The burglary, theft by receiving stolen property and firearm possession by a convicted felon charges were severed from this trial by request of defense counsel and will be tried at a later date.

Hill did file a speedy trial request. Myers said two witnesses are on active military duty and won’t return stateside until this fall.

“Ultimately, I’ll be moving for the court to extend the period of time I have to try that, but we’ll try him sometime before the end of the year on the remaining counts,” the ADA said.
