5K to promote healthy habits

MILLEDGEVILLE — The Baldwin County public school system’s Wellness Policy Committee is following its mission of urging youth and their families to get healthy by promoting good eating habits and increasing physical activity levels. As a fundraiser for the committees’ chapter office — Georgia School Nutrition Association — a Spring Fever 5K will be held to unite the community to improve the health of Baldwin County.

“The committee started last year and is made up of 16 individuals including parents, school administrators, teachers, Live Healthy Baldwin representatives and people in the community. The thrust of the committee is to help people in the Baldwin County and school-related community to improve their health by eating a good diet and getting physical activity,” said Cordes Seabrook, with the school district’s school nutrition and food services. “Part of the 5K idea is we as a country are overweight, so it’s part of how we can be healthy and a more well Baldwin County. We’re trying to not just put it on paper, but do it in a meaningful way.”

The sanctioned 5K is slated to kick off at 9 a.m. Saturday, March 2 at the Baldwin High School parking lot. Walkers and runners can register on the day of the event at 8 a.m.

“We want to get as many community people involved, not just students and teachers, but their families as well,” Seabrook said Thursday. “So far we have about 100 people registered. We would love to have another 100 sign-up. It could be a success, or it could be a huge success.”

The entry fee for timed runners is $20, and walkers and runners not officially timed is $10. Awards will be given to the first place male and female in different categories based on age groups.

“I think this 5K will be very appealing to serious runners because there’s a 93-foot vertical drop between Baldwin High School and the stadium, so it would be an advantage for them; it’s more of a downhill race. I expect this to be a fast course,” Seabrook said. “We’re sanctioned by USA Track & Field, which means we have insurance and we get a certified race course, which means it has been measured precisely. There’s over 400 5K’s in Georgia and virtually none of them are certified or sanctioned; less than 10 percent are sanctioned and less than that are Peachtree Road Race qualified. We will be a Peachtree Road Race qualifier next year.”
