GC students earns newspaper design award

MILLEDGEVILLE — A junior mass communication major at Georgia College earned fourth place for her design work with GC’s student newspaper at the Southeast Journalism Conference’s Best of the South competition held recently in Jackson, Tenn.

Marilyn Ferrell, who is also the paper’s photo editor, traveled to Union University, home the conference, and competed against 45 other schools including University of Mississippi, University of Memphis, Belmont University and Vanderbilt University.

“I am super proud that I won an award at this regional level,” Ferrell said. “I'm glad that my work at The Colonnade was recognized especially because I put so much time and hard work into my Leisure section.”

Vanderbilt University took home first place in this category, and Ferrell says she is especially proud to show that GC student journalists can compete against those at much larger institutions. She was also the only delegate from Georgia to attend the conference. 

Ferrell’s award-winning designs cover diverse topics like caffeine consumption, body art, local artists, and downtown nightlife. Next year, Ferrell will be a senior and will work as The Colonnade’s Arts & Entertainment editor.

The category of Newspaper Page Layout Designer was judged by Victoria Beall, creative director at KIWI Magazine and former art director at Greenwich Magazine.

The Colonnade is the official student newspaper of Georgia College. This weekly paper informs and entertains students, faculty, staff and alumni about events concerning the campus community. The independent paper provides students opportunities for hands-on experience as writers, advertising representatives, editors, photojournalists, designers and publishers, while exercising the constitutional rights and responsibilities of freedom of the press. Established in 1924, The Colonnade continues to offer accurate, face and complete news coverage and as a public open forum for debate and discussion for the GC community.
