Eagle Ridge Elementary gets new principal

MILLEDGEVILLE — The Baldwin County School Board approved a recommendation to hire Shaun Wells as the new principal of Eagle Ridge Elementary School.

The decision was made at a called meeting Wednesday at the Board of Education.

Wells will fill the shoes of recently retired principal and educator Jeanette Scott. Out of 35 years of working in education, 10 of those years were spent as the principal of Eagle Ridge.

Wells, who comes to Baldwin County from Newton County, has worked in education for 16 years.

In his previous job, he served as assistant principal of instruction in DeKalb County School District, working with middle school students. He has also worked as a math teacher in the same district.

"Working with middle school students is different than working with elementary kids, but the goal is the same -- to make sure they get the best education possible and are well taken care of," he said.

As a father, Wells understands the value of a good public education. He and his wife have two children. Their 12-year-old and 13-year-old are both enrolled in Newton County Public School System.

He says Baldwin County mirrors Newton County, which was one of the factors in applying for the position.

"I like the small community feel of Baldwin County and I wanted to work in a place that mirrored home for me."

Superintendent Dr. Noris Price congratulated Wells on his new position.

"I look forward to working with you and based on your experience I'm sure you will do an excellent job," she said.

Wells expressed to Price and the school board his gratitude for choosing him for the vacancy.

"I love the warmth I'm already receiving from the board and I'm honored to become part of the Baldwin family," he said.

After tendering his resignation, Wells will begin his new role as Eagle Ridge principal immediately.

"I'm a mixture of emotions, mostly excited, nervous and honored, but I'm definitely looking forward to it."
