Driver charged with vehicular homicide

MILLEDGEVILLE — Charges were recently levied relating to the Jan. 6 Gordon Highway collision that took the life of a local woman.

Michael Alan McCant, 36, of Gordon is charged with first-degree homicide by vehicle, driving under the influence, failure to maintain lane and driving while license suspended or revoked as requested by the Ocmulgee Judicial Circuit District Attorney's office.

The toxicology report from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Division of Forensic Sciences showed McCant tested positive for drugs at the time of the crash. Test results showed methamphetamine and other controlled substance.

At 7:08 a.m., the Georgia State Patrol responded to the accident involving McCant and Janice Scruggs, 64, of Milledgeville occurring just north of J.F. Hall Road off state Route 243 also known as Gordon Highway.

According to the Georgia State Patrol crash report, there was a collision between McCant's 2007 BMW sedan traveling northbound and Scruggs' 2006 Crown Victoria heading south.

Scruggs was pronounced dead on the scene. McCant was extracted from his BMW by emergency responders and rushed to medical attention.

He was in critical condition at The Medical Center of Central Georgia for some time after the incident.

The GSP Troop E Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team (SCRT) handled the crash investigation.

On June 18, the SCRT team delivered the case findings to the District Attorney. McCant was not yet booked on the charges at press time Tuesday.
