Jarrett: 'I feel it necessary to make a heartfelt apology'

MILLEDGEVILLE — To the citizens of Milledgeville and Baldwin County: I know many of you have read or heard about the news story printed in The Union-Recorder newspaper last Saturday regarding statements that were made after a called work session of the Mayor and City Council which I now know was recorded by Councilman Walter Reynolds without my knowledge or permission. I feel it necessary to make a heartfelt apology to each of you for those comments and to reassure you that the words expressed by me were expressed out of anger and frustration. My statements were in response to Councilman Reynolds’ deceptively prepared remarks as he was the only person in the conversation that knew the conversation was being recorded. For this, I was wrong and I humbly apologize to each of you.

I do want to be clear with respect to the process that I utilize when making decisions as to where City funds are invested. In the instant case and prior to making a decision to transfer City funds from Century Bank & Trust to Wells Fargo, our finance department solicited from all of our financial institutions, including Century Bank & Trust, quotes regarding rates of interest to be paid on large certificates of deposit. After receiving the multiple quotes from our financial institutions, including Century Bank & Trust, I made the decision to go with Wells Fargo because at the time when we solicited the rate quotes, Wells Fargo was paying a significantly higher rate of interest. I provide you with this information only because I want to reassure the City taxpayers in particular that the transfer of City funds to Wells Fargo was a sound business decision.

Again I apologize for my statements and the harm that I may have caused to our elected officials and to the City that I love so very much. I promise each of you that I will double my efforts in working to regain your confidence as we all move forward to build a better Milledgeville-Baldwin County.

Barry Jarrett
