GMC bats stale after break

MILLEDGEVILLE — Coming off a brief hiatus from live competitions, Georgia Military Prep School baseball blew off some rust in their first game since spring break against First Presbyterian Day School at home Wednesday night.

GMC appeared to be a little out of sync early on, but settled in to hold the Vikings at bay for a respectable 7-1 loss.

“I do think the break made us a little rusty,” head coach Allen Simmons said. “Not because we didn’t practice — we practiced, but I think just game speed, live pitching, game situations — it made us a little rusty.

“The guys hung in there, they kept fighting, didn’t make many errors — the scoreboard says 7-1, but we played tough and made them work. I’m happy with their effort, but we just didn’t hit the ball as much as we needed to.”

Despite getting into scoring positions on multiple occasions, the Bulldogs struggled to get their bats going against FPD, mounting 5 hits to the opponent’s 11 on the night.

“That’s something we’ve struggled with all year, is getting the hit when we need the hit to score those runs,” Simmons said. “We’ve got to learn that once we get runners in scoring position, somebody’s got to come through with a key hit.”

Tyler MacCartee went 2-4 at the plate last night, while teammate Patrick Lewis finished 2-3; however, GMC was only able to manage a run against FPD.

Simmons, in his second year at the helm of the Bulldogs’ baseball program, credits the missed opportunities to the team’s youth.

“These guys are young and they’re working their tails off to get better, and I’m proud of them for that,” he said. “They’ve just got to know that once you get in that situation, you’ve got to come through. It will come, but they’ve just got to keep working.”
