GC health fair provides free information, screenings

MILLEDGEVILLE — Georgia College employees and students will have the chance to “Step Right Up to Great Health” during its much-anticipated annual spring health fair.

“This spring will be our seventh health fair that I’ve put on since I’ve been here. Interns used to do a small health fair before 2006,” said Rachel Pope, university health educator. “We try to make it bigger every year.”

The circus-themed health fair is slated from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, March 13 in the Magnolia Ballroom. During the free event, Georgia College students, faculty and staff can stop by to learn about various health benefits and receive free testing and screenings.

“Every year we have nursing students and exercise science students offer what they’ve learned in the classroom with the community, including blood sugar, blood pressure, height, weight and body composition,” Pope said. “In the past, we’ve had athletic trainers examine joints and shoulders, dermatologists on site and massages. Last year we even had a mobile HIV unit do private testing and provide results quickly.”

Hosted by Student Health Services, the annual spring health fair is one of the most anticipated and well attended health events for the clinic.

“Last year we had about 200 people come out,” Pope said. “This is a big event for employees as well as students to know what’s available in the area and get some free testing that they might not get otherwise. We always expect a good turnout,”

Sponsors and vendors interested in participating are encouraged to sign up by March 7 at no charge to give and display information to attendees. A table, table cloth and electricity will also be provided if needed.

“Right now we have over 30 vendors, which is the biggest we’ve had so far,” Pope said Friday. “This provides free advertisement for businesses and organizations. If a vendor is unable to attend, we would love for them to consider being a door prize sponsor, or they can send us their health information and we can display it for them.”

For more information about the upcoming health fair, or to participate as a vendor or sponsor, contact Pope at 478-445-1670 or email rachel.pope@gcsu.edu.
