Meriwether water main break under control

MILLEDGEVILLE —

Remarkably, the first arctic blast of the New Year causing six Baldwin County water storage tanks to empty three weeks ago reported no main breaks.

The second snowy round this week caused one in North Baldwin Thursday morning.

Baldwin County Water and Sewer Department responders fixed the issue within a few hours. The break was another test in a crazy stretch for the department.

“We've got plenty of water thank goodness,” County Water and Sewer Superintendent Jason Kidd said. “This whole month has been something else.”

Courtesy of the Baldwin County Sheriff's Office, the Baldwin County Water and Sewer Department received an alert of a 10-inch main break near the intersection of Meriwether Road and Lowe Road at 6:55 a.m.

“It looked like the pipe split in its joint section more than likely due to the temperature,” Kidd said.

The gushing water caused ice further down Meriwether in front of T-Bones Nursery.

Kidd said county water users within the immediate area were affected due to closed water feed as a precaution preventing air in the lines.

The water department did shut off pumps in certain locations to alleviate any pull from the Highway 212 station.

By 1 p.m. Thursday, Kidd estimated that water customers wouldn't notice any change in their water flow.

The main break had no affect on the overall county system.

“This is our first major main break of the New Year,” Kidd said. “Any leak catches you off guard, but we have the materials and stuff to fix it.”

Water and Sewer staff also pitched in with Public Works and Georgia Department of Transportation crews over the last two nights cleaning bridges subject to dangerous icing.

They, along with other county and City of Milledgeville departments, could use some winter weather relief.

Call Baldwin County Water and Sewer Department at 478-445-4237 for water service inquiries.
