Local music professor celebrates the sounds of success

MILLEDGEVILLE — Dr. Maureen Horgan, professor of music at Georgia College and professional trombonist, has recently achieved an impressive goal that she is eager to add to her list of accomplishments. The release of her CD, "Mo's Bit o' Blues" is now out on Centaur Records. It includes 13 songs from several genres of music, from jazz and hip-hop to electroacoustic and atonal.

"This is something I've wanted to do throughout my professional career but never seemed to have the time to set things into motion," said Horgan.

To say that Horgan is a mere musician would be an understatement. She has more than 30 years of experience as a professional musician and teacher, performing with and for an eclectic group of musicians such as Leonard Bernstein, Aaron Copland, YoYo Ma, Frederick Fennell, Frank Battisti, Victor Borge, Henri Mancini, Jacki Byard, the Irish Tenors and Brian Wilson. She has also performed at Carnegie Hall, Boston Symphony Hall and has had solo recitals at Jordan Hall. Currently, she is the president and member of the Executive Board of the International Women's Brass Conference.

"Mo's Bit o' Blues" did not happen overnight. It took a lot of time, money and determination. After seven recording sessions in four states and more than two years of hard work, the desire officially became a tangible piece of success.

"In the spring of 2010, Georgia College gave me professional leave to make the CD and it took every bit of those two years to get it completed," said Horgan.

The pieces on the CD incorporate works from the trombone, flute and electronics, trombone quartet, and trombone, piano and brass quintet. She started recording the pieces in the summer of 2010 and it took over a year just for the execution of the music.
