Main Street filmed as national award finalist

MILLEDGEVILLE — The Milledgeville Main Street program was selected as one of 10 semifinalists for the national Great American Main Street Award. Winners will be announced  May 18 during the 2014 National Main Street Conference Opening Plenary in Detroit, Mich. Main Street and Downtown Development Authority Executive Director Carlee Schulte, pictured, and other influential downtown business owners and city elected officials were filmed for a piece leading up to the official winner announcement. Schulte told the city’s downtown story in the renovated Elks Lodge building now called the City of Milledgeville Economic Development Center. She said the downtown district progressed beyond vacancy and blight since the Main Street program started in 1988. Giant buildings have since and continue turning into mixed-use projects and commercial spaces. The Baldwin Lofts and a 50/50 façade match grant have transformed downtown. With First Friday events and the Deep Roots Festival, Schulte said the area is always active and ‘a fun, vibrant place.’ Each year the National Main Street Center recognizes exceptional Main Street communities whose successes serve as a model for comprehensive, preservation-based commercial district revitalization. This year the National Main Street Center received the most applications since 2009. Milledgeville was the only community selected from Georgia.
