BOE begins interviews for new superintendent

MILLEDGEVILLE — The Baldwin County Board of Education will soon begin the first round of interviews to fill the soon-to-be vacant superintendent’s post.

According to school board chairman John Jackson, District 4, the board received more than 30 applicants for the job.

"We've been making a lot of progress toward narrowing it down to one person," said Jackson.

Four candidates have been chosen out of the 30 applicants as possible hires for the position.

In November the school board accepted Superintendent Geneva Braziel's resignation, effective June 30. In December the board signed a contract with the Georgia School Boards Association (GSBA) to allow GSBA to conduct the initial search and evaluation for a new school superintendent. The application for the job was created by the GSBA and posted online in February on GSBA websites, Teach Georgia and on the local school system website.

Applicants are required to hold or are eligible for a Georgia Leadership Certificate at L-6 level or higher, and to have had successful experience as a classroom educator. Georgia law requires that the candidate not have an immediate family member serving on the Baldwin County Board of Education or be employed as an administrator in the school district after July 1, 2009. Preferred qualifications should carry successful educational experience in the southeastern region of the United States as a superintendent or principal, effective oral communication and public speaking skills, participation in community and professional organizations, and they should possess an ability to utilize technology at every level.

Earlier this year the board solicited community feedback on what locals desired for the next superintendent.

The first round of interviews is slated for next week at the County Chamber of Commerce office. The board anticipates having a new superintendent in place before the start of the 2014-2015 school year in August.
