Local pastor eyeing CSH chapel

MILLEDGEVILLE — Pastor Jerry Stokes has developed a Milledgeville area congregation and outreach programs for the past four years.

He began at Spring Hill Baptist Church and birthed a ministry called the New Destiny Christian Fellowship.

“We are pastoring at and encouraging the Southside when it comes to education and tutelage with our young adults and seniors,” Stokes said during Wednesday's Central State Hospital Local Redevelopment Authority (CSHLRA) board meeting.

Stokes requested a three-year lease for Chapel No. 5 with the option to purchase within 12 months or at the end of the leasing term.

Stokes said his organization would accept the property in its current condition, make the necessary improvements and maintain the property over the term of the lease.

“Our ultimate goal is to purchase the property as a term of the lease, and we would like to establish a value in its current condition,” Stokes' letter to the board states.

CSHLRA executive director Mike Couch was authorized to negotiate a draft lease for Chapel No. 5 to be brought back to the board for consideration.

New Destiny has created a clothing and food drive outreach ministry.

“We've been able to host afterschool programs for some of the young people on the Southside,” he said. “We want to look into GED opportunities for some of the adults.”

The New Destiny Christian Center is a member of the Georgia Baptist Convention Family of Churches with 501 (c)(3) non-profit status.

Stokes' outreach meets at Walter B. Williams Park currently.
