BOE incumbent faces opposition

MILLEDGEVILLE — Baldwin County Board of Education District 5 incumbent Wes Cummings will now face a challenger in the nonpartisan race as Ulyesess Green Foston Sr. qualified to run Thursday.

As incumbent to the school board’s District 1 seat, Gloria Wicker qualified earlier this week, having no opposition as of press time Thursday.

Baldwin County State Court Judge incumbent Alan Thrower and challenger Carl S. Cansino also filed notice of their candidacy to run for the post.

In the partisan race, incumbent Maxine Blackwell qualified for re-election to the solicitor general seat Wednesday. Blackwell is the only local candidate to qualify for the partisan race.

The general election, separate from primary, will go on the ballet May 20.

The qualifying fee for solicitor general is $3,088; state court judge is $1,508; and school board districts are $108 each.

Candidates interested in qualifying for nonpartisan local offices can do so at the Baldwin County Courthouse from 8:30 a.m. to noon today as the qualifying period comes to a close.

Candidates qualifying for nonpartisan parties can go to the probate court in room 109, and in the hearing room 104 for partisan offices.

Candidates must bring a valid I.D. for notary purpose and the qualifying fee. A completed declaration of candidacy is suggested if a candidate is running as a political party candidate or the notice of candidacy if a candidate is qualifying for a nonpartisan office.

In Atlanta, incumbent W.B. “Burt” Jones of the Georgia Senate District 25 seat and state Rep. E. Culver “Rusty” Kidd of District 145 have both qualified for re-election. Neither candidates had opposition to qualify by press time Thursday.

Donna H. Sheldon, Gary Gerrard, I.K. “Kenneth” Dious, Jody B. Hice, M.A. “Mike” Collins, S. Mitchell Swan and Stephen K. Simpson qualified for the U.S. 10th District Congressional seat.

Incumbent Paul Collins Broun did not qualify as he seeks the U.S. senate seat, which he qualified for Monday. Broun is opposed by challengers Arthur A. “Art” Gardner, Branko “Dr. Rad” Radulovacki, David A. Perdue, Derrick E. Grayson, J.H. “Jack” Kingston, J.P. “Phil” Gingrey, Karen C. Handel, M. Michelle Nunn, O. “Steen” Miles and Todd Anthony Robinson.

Qualifying for nonpartisan state offices is being conducted at the State Elections Division offices in Atlanta and Tifton. Qualifying for political parties for state offices will be conducted at the state capitol.

For more information on local qualifying, call Judge Todd Blackwell, superintendent of elections, at 478-445-4807, or visit the Secretary of State’s website at www.sos.ga.gov.
